Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame: 2009 Inductees

The People who have been nominated for the Hall of Fame are people who changed the face of their community for the better through the efforts of volunteerism and the vision of Recreation to better serve the citizens of Henry County.

Wendell Campbell

Hall of FameWendell Campbell coached little league baseball, football and basketball for many years in Henry County. Mr. Campbell was president of the Henry County Tennis Association for 21 years. During his time of president, he helped build tennis courts, and brought ALTA, USTA and other leagues to the County. He was also involved with helping A Friends House get children interested in playing Tennis.


Ricky Craig

Hall of FameRicky Craig was president of the McDonough Youth Association from 1985-1997. Mr. Craig coached Little League Baseball and women’s softball. He introduced Intermerial Ball in the McDonough Youth Association. He was very involved in working for the grounds grew for Craig Field, and also recruiting people to help with concessions and ball field maintenance.


Norman Fowler

Hall of FameNorman Fowler has been with State Farm Insurance for 40 years. During that time he has sponsored sever athletic teams, softball in particular. He coached Little League Football and Baseball. Mr. Fowler also organized and oversaw the construction of baseball fields, football fields, and the building of tennis courts. Mr. Fowler was a coach for Henry County Tennis teams and was active in the McDonough Youth Association.


Franklin Grubbs

Hall of FameFranklin Grubbs was one of the founding fathers of the Henry County Umpire Association and helped start the McDonough Youth Association Football program. Mr. Grubbs was inducted to the USSSA Softball Hall of Fame in 2000. Mr. Grubbs was also an adult softball official as well as coach for youth softball and football.


Eddie Heaton

Hall of FameEddie Heaton served with the Stockbridge Athletic Association for 17 years beginning in 1977. From 1981-83 Mr. Heaton was the Assistant Baseball Director for Stockbridge. Mr. Heaton was Baseball Director in 1984 and helped bring Fall Baseball to Stockbridge. He also helped with the construction of buildings at Cochran Park and in 1994 he won the Georgia Amateur Baseball’s Man of the Year Award.


Danny Lunsford

Hall of FameDanny Lunsford started playing ball in Ola in 1959. He played from the age of 9 through his teenage years. Danny got involved with the Youth Association and coaching in 1979. He coached several teams and served in different positions within the Youth Association until around 1986. At Henry County High School, he held the office of President for the Booster club for 6 years. He orchestrated a multitude of fundraisers. The most memorable being the Jerry Clower and Tracy Lawrence concerts. The fundraisers helped to provide lighting at the baseball and softball fields, sod the ball fields, batting cages, bleachers, and built a concession stand with restrooms. The ball field went from the “sandlot” backyard style to being a modernized field that we know it to be today.


Vernon Moss

Hall of FameVernon Moss was president of the Stockbridge Association for 16 years. In 1964 he started the Youth Football Program and was a coach for about 16 years. Mr. Moss helped with the building of Cochran Park and assisted Mr. Charles Bledsoe on many Recreation projects over a 25 year period including the paving of parking lots and walking tracks, as well as the construction of basketball and tennis courts.


H.C. Seabolt

Hall of FameFrom 1968 to 1993 H.C.Seabolt was Commissioner, Tournament Director and Coach for the Locust Grove Youth Association. Mr. Seabolt started coaching baseball in Locust grove in 1968 and started coaching football in 1986. He coached youth basketball in McDonough in 1984 and 1985. In 1986, Mr. Seabolt brought youth basketball to Locust Grove. Mr. Seabolt also sat on the first girls Softball board in Henry County in 1985.


John Spivey

Hall of FameJohn Spivey served on the original Recreation Board for 3 years. He was one of the individuals that recommended Charles Bledsoe for Director. Mr. Spivey worked with Mr. Bledsoe and the Board of Commissioners to obtain the 1st Federal Grant for the Recreation Department to develop Cochran Park. Mr. Spivey was President of the Stockbridge Athletic Association for 3 years from 1974-1978.


Johnny Wilkerson

Hall of FameJohnny Wilkerson started playing Baseball in Ola in the late 1930’s. Mr. Wilkerson played for the Ola Amateur team in the 1950’s. He coached Little League in Ola for 5 years. In the late 1950’s he signed a personal note to light the Ola Ball field. 

Marylou Coley (Deceased)

Hall of FameMarylou Coley was a member of the Hampton Youth Club for 15 years. Mrs. Coley didn’t just support her own children; she also supported many other children through out the community. Some of the kids didn’t have any one to transport them to and from games and she would fill in and make sure they got where they needed to be. She also made sure they had a decent meal to eat. She was always at the games cheering them on.
