Judicial Center Parking Deck Officially Opens

Judicial Center Parking Deck Officially Opens
Participating in the Judicial Center Parking Deck ribbon cutting are (l. to r.) Judge Wesley Shannon, Judge Jason T. Harper, District IV Commissioner Reid Bowman, District V Commissioner Johnny Basler, Judge Buddy Welch, District I Commissioner Warren Holder, District III Commissioner Randy Stamey, Chairman Elizabeth ‘B.J.’ Mathis, Judge Ernest Blount, Clerk of State Court, Shelley Gardner, Steve Moore from Moore Bass, Clerk of Superior Court Barbara Harrison, Ted Davidson from Panattoni Construction, Michelle Ferguson of the Solicitor’s Office and Scott Sage, Consultant for Moore Bass.

The Henry County Board of Commissioners, together with the SPLOST Department, Judges and City Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Judicial Center Parking Deck on September 7th, officially opening it to the public. Parking in McDonough had been scarce, and the new facility is expected to provide immediate relief, making it easier for citizens to get to court, and patronize these local businesses.

“It’s a great advantage to citizens because it puts you so close and you’re within walking distance to everything on the Square once you’ve parked in the garage,” said Reid Bowman, District IV Commissioner. “We’ll have plenty of places for our citizens to park for Superior and State Court as well as for all of the events on the Square.”

Constructed using SPLOST III sales tax dollars, the 2-level parking deck has 306 spaces, but was designed so that a third level can be added in the future, creating an additional 139 parking spaces.
“Originally, it was going to be a smaller three-story garage. At the point of getting the design from the builders, we found that a two-story garage would work much better and give us the 300 spaces, which would allow us to go up in the future to add 450 spaces total,” said Bowman. “We’ve added steel and concrete to the footings and to the columns and to the beams, so it won’t be nearly as expensive to go up later on as it would have been. Plus, we’re utilizing the entire space.”

The design/build project was constructed by Panattoni Construction.  It was designed to fit in aesthetically with the both the judicial center and the residential and commercial structures surrounding the garage.

The project cost a total of $3.5 million and took just over one year to build. Construction was delayed slightly due to the need to upgrade the stormwater infrastructure to handle the runoff created by the parking deck.  The County partnered with the City of McDonough on this portion of the project to avoid any duplication of infrastructure, saving taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Judicial Center Parking Deck is located at 63 Lawrenceville Street in McDonough, just behind the Judicial Center.  It is now open to the public, and parking in the deck is free. For more information on this, or any other SPLOST project, please visit www.henrycounty-ga.org/splost.
