Flag Retirement Ceremony to be Held June 14 In honor of Flag Day, Henry County Parks & Recreation is sponsoring a Flag Retirement Ceremony as a free community service in order to ensure that American flags are retired with the dignity they deserve.
Tattered and torn American flags that are no longer suitable for flying are being collected at the Veterans Historical Museum located in the Red Barn at Heritage Park. Residents, schools, businesses and other organizations who have worn out flags can drop them off at this location through Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
According to the United States Flag Code, “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
A Flag Retirement Ceremony will then be held Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at the Veterans Wall of Honor, also in Heritage Park. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which is being conducted by Boy Scout Troop 61.
The Veterans Historical Museum is located at 101 Lake Dow Road, just off Highway 81 East in McDonough. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday – Saturday.
