Miles For Meals Makes Great Strides for Seniors for the 18th Consecutive Year

As the single largest fundraiser organized by the Henry County Council on Aging to benefit Henry County Senior Services’ various programs, the Miles for Meals Walk is striding into its 18th year of helping our County’s senior citizens. This year’s event will take place at Heritage Park on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 9 a.m. at the Jason T. Harper Event Center.  Walkers of all ages are encouraged to come out for this long-standing community tradition. 

Every dollar raised stays in Henry County to assist local senior citizens, with the funds helping to provide critical services, such as hot, nutritious meals that are home-delivered each weekday to hundreds of seniors through the Meals on Wheels program, nutritional supplements to those who qualify, and in-home health services.  Without these crucial funds, Senior Services fears that they won’t be able to assist as many people due to funding cuts from grant programs.  And that means fewer people will receive what is perhaps one of the most important side benefits of the program: a way to ensure that these seniors are checked on regularly by a caring volunteer.

The two-mile route will take participants on trails throughout Heritage Park, with a choice of routes to fit all participants’ fitness levels. Registration for this family-oriented event begins at
8 a.m., with the actual walk to commence at 9 a.m.  Water will be available throughout the morning, and a cookout will take place at 11 a.m., with delicious hamburgers and hotdogs generously provided by Sutherland Foods.  All walkers get a free t-shirt and meal ticket to the cookout included with their $25 donation.  Groups and individuals that raise the most money will be recognized at the event.

To add to the festivities, there will be a DJ, door prizes, and a clown.  Bring your sweet tooth and your green thumb, because there will be a bake sale and the 4-H’ers will be there selling their beautiful geraniums.
