Major Jeff Norman commands the jail operations
unit of the Sheriff's Office. The jail's function is to receive,
and process people that are taken into custody by various law enforcement
agencies within Henry County.
Once a person has been turned over to the jail, they are either
given an opportunity to post a bond and be released pending a court
hearing or held until the courts dispose of their case.
Once a person is convicted and sentenced to either county time or
state time, they are held until their sentence is served in accordance
to law or transferred into a state facility.
The jail has a staff of 98 sworn officers and 2
civilian personnel. The jail was built in 1991 with an addition
added in 2002 and has a total bed capacity of 335.
In the fall of 2003 the old jail on Hampton
St. (Ga.
Hwy. 20-81) was reopened with 84 beds
and is being used to house male inmates that are serving a county
or city sentence.
These inmates are used in various departments within the county
and city to do community service saving the taxpayers hundreds of
dollars. The average total inmate population is currently
running 485.

The Jail has a full time medical staff on site around the clock that is contracted from Georgia Correctional Health which provides all the medical needs to the inmates on an in-house basis.
This is cost effective to the county and reduces the security risk of transporting inmates outside the facility unless it is of an extreme emergency.
The inmate meals are provided by a contract with a food service company, ABL. Inmates are served a hot breakfast and lunch with sandwiches for dinner.
For detailed information regarding any inmate
within the jail facility call 770-288-7070 or the Hampton
St. facility at 770-288-7092.
