Commissioners Approve Formation of
SPLOST IV Committee
With the current Henry County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax set to expire next year, the Henry County Board of Commissioners approved the formation of a SPLOST IV Committee that will be composed of 12 members including two members appointed by each commissioner, one member appointed by the Chairman and one member appointed by the Henry County Municipal Association. The action came at today’s regular meeting.
The SPLOST IV Committee will be responsible for formulating an accurate estimate of the amount of revenue that could potentially be generated by continuing the SPLOST program. They will also receive public input from the Henry County community as to what projects should be included in the SPLOST program, formulate estimates on potential projects and present a report to the Henry County Board of Commissioners on those cost estimates, as well as recommended projects to be included on a SPLOST IV ballot initiative. Similar committees had been formed for earlier SPLOST programs.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the community to participate,” said Commission Chairman Tommy Smith. “I highly recommend we repeat this process. Time is of the essence.”
The findings of the committee will assist the Henry County Board of Commissioners in exploring the viability of calling for a voter referendum on the continuation of the SPLOST program.
Commissioners are expected to make their appointee selections at the March 19 regular Commission, meeting with the first Committee meeting tentatively scheduled for March 21. The Committee will need to conclude its business by June 30, 2013 so that a report or presentation for the Board’s review and consideration can be made at a public meeting of the Board of Commissioners on a date set thereafter.
