Captain James "Jim" Burch

Captain James Burch began his career in 1992 with the Henry County Police Department. In 1992 he transferred to the Narcotics Investigations Division as a K-9 Handler/Interstate Criminal Interdiction Officer. In 1994 he was promoted to Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division where he investigated numerous types of crimes. In 1994 Captain Burch was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to Uniform Patrol Division. Captain Burch joined the United States Air National Guard in 1995 and served until 2004, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. In 1996 he was transferred to supervise a newly formed TAC/K-9 Unit. The TAC Unit was an Anti- Crime Unit designed to respond to high probable crime areas, work Criminal Investigations/Narcotics Criminal Interdiction, and be an on duty entry team. In 1998 he was promoted to Sergeant in the Criminal Investigations Division where he supervised the Crimes Against Property Detectives and the Crimes Against Person Detectives. In September, 2001 Captain Burch was activated by the United States Air Force and served a two-year tour in the US and overseas. Upon returning from active duty service in 2003, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and worked in the Uniform Patrol Division, Special Operations Division, and Criminal Investigations Division. Captain Burch supervised the opening of the Fairview Precinct and served as the North Precinct Day Watch Commander. In 2007 he was the first Police Officer from Henry County to be assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force in Atlanta. Before joining the Henry County Police Department, Captain Burch served five years active duty with the US Air Force, worked for both Dekalb County Police and Forest Park Police Departments.
On November 1, 2010, James Burch was promoted to Captain over the Internal Affairs Division. As Commander of the Internal Affairs Division, Captain Burch is responsible for internal affairs investigations, hiring and recruiting, and open records requests.
