Henry Hurricanes Take Top Honors
In Wheelchair Handball Championship
A “Perfect Storm” came through Henry County this weekend as the Henry Hurricanes finished the season with a perfect 7-0 record by defeating the Gwinnett Heat in the AAASP State Wheelchair Handball Junior Varsity Championship game by a score of
10-2. This win adds to their 2008 and 2009 State Wheelchair Basketball JV Championship titles.
The Henry Hurricanes is the County’s school-based wheelchair sports team comprised of physically disabled students who attend various schools throughout the county. According to Harlon Mathews, Coordinator with Henry County Parks and Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Division, the partnership between Henry County Schools and Henry County Parks and Recreation is a “winning combination” that is extremely instrumental in the program’s success.
“I want to say thank you to (Superintendent) Dr. Ethan Hildreth, Henry County Schools, Henry County Parks and Recreation and the Henry County community for your amazing support,” said Matthews.
He said that Dr. Hildreth attended the championship game and noted that the game was so great and intense that after about two minutes of watching he was so caught up in the game that he no longer saw disabilities, but two teams going head to head for a win.
Matthews said next up is basketball, and he and the athletes look forward to a fun and competitive season.
“Keep the cheers coming as the Henry Hurricanes begin practicing for the 2012/2013 Wheelchair Basketball season,” he said.
