County Breaks Ground on First Phase of Fairview Road Widening

County Breaks Ground on
First Phase of Fairview Road Widening
Participating in the ground-breaking ceremony for the Fairview Road project were, from left to right: Phil Woodall,SPLOST Construction Inspector, Peter Coakley with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., Charles Smith, HC Development Authority Board of Directors, District 5 Commissioner Bruce Holmes, Bert Bivins, SPLOST Project Manager, Roque Romero, SPLOST Transportation Director, and Chae Yi, SPLOST Civil Engineer.

On November 26, Henry County officials took part in the official groundbreaking of the first phase of the Fairview Road Project, which is one of the biggest transportation projects remaining on the SPLOST III project list.

Phase I of the Fairview Road Project will realign 0.426 miles of West Panola Rd. to intersect with Fairview Road just west of Danner Road. Intersection improvements will also include signalization.

The entire Fairview Road Project, including the second phase, which should begin in the first quarter of next year, will consist of improvements to 1.85 miles of roadway from Anvil Block Road to just beyond what will be the newly realigned Panola Fairview intersection, and is expected to stimulate economic growth, making the location more attractive to businesses and increasing employment opportunities in the area. Plans for the Fairview Road project include widening the road to four lanes and several other improvements, including eight foot wide, multi-use paths, decorative stamped concrete crosswalks, mast arm signal poles, decorative lighting and landscaping.

District V Commissioner Bruce Holmes has worked diligently to see the improvements made to the Fairview community. He said he is excited by the progress and is looking forward to attracting new business to the area, the largest being the Exigence Medical Developer, which he said will pump much-needed capital into the area and attract businesses and restaurants to Fairview.

“We expect that Exigence alone will provide 1,300 jobs, which will be a huge gain for this community,” said Holmes. “My vision was to create a health and wellness community and that begins with the work being done here. This road is going to be very important to the area, not only by reducing congestion on Fairview and East Atlanta Roads, but it’s going to act as an entrance for the medical, restaurant and retail campus.”

Charles Smith, Holmes’ appointee to the Henry County Development Authority, was on hand for the groundbreaking and is encouraged by the progress in the Fairview community.

“This project is going to help us alleviate traffic issues and attract new businesses, and we’re very excited by the potential within the Fairview community,” said Smith.

The Fairview Road Project is a designated SPLOST III project and part of Phase I will be funded through SPLOST, with the remainder funded through the monies transferred from the Department of Transportation. The total construction budget for Phase I is $750,780.43.

With Phase I started and the remainder set to begin early in 2013, the entire Fairview Rd. project is expected to take up to three years to complete.
